Betty is a Mayan descendant from Costa Rica. Before joining NICWA, Betty worked for Portland Parks and Recreation at three community center sites for four years as a rental coordinator, at the front desk, with marketing and outreach, and assisting with the children in the preschool, afterschool, and summer camp programs. With the City of Portland, she was also a part of the Latinx PDX affinity group and the Diverse and Empowered Employees of the City of Portland (DEEP) Executive Committee which sponsors cultural events and advocates for equity within the City. Betty has her bachelors degree from Portland State University in Cultural Anthropology with a focus on Indigenous People of the Americas. She is honored to have joined NICWA. Besides having a strong passion for the wellbeing of youth, human rights and preservation of culture, Betty loves to try new foods, practice yoga, and travel.
